Building Better Rubrics: Tips and Tools
Many teachers are asked to use rubrics or are shown rubrics as an example of “best practices” without having the opportunity to learn about the theoretical foundations rubrics should be built upon. Teachers and students often run into trouble with rubrics because of common problems, such as:
confusing language
overly dense elements
redundant elements
no distinction between formative and summative rubrics
unclear relationship to the assignment or course
insufficient support or feedback

In this session, we will discuss tips for writing clear assignment and assessment prompts and less ambiguous, more understandable rubrics. We will also cover the difference between formative feedback (assignments) and summative assessments and how rubrics should be used differently for different types of student work. Finally, we will share various online and offline tools you can use for developing rubrics and providing feedback to students. http://funwithidet.wordpress.com/rubrics

Blended Learning for STEM Through Coding and Game Design
Come and see how Blended Learning can take your classrooms into the 21st century by harnessing the power of Coding and Video Game Design. Presenters will show how teachers with no background in coding can use Computer Science in grades 4 – 12 as a way of guiding students to think logically and to develop problem-solving strategies. Before coding an educational game students are taught to identify a challenge, imagine a solution, experiment with it and refine it. Demonstrating the use of the Globaloria content will show how coding and video game design can be used to enhance all classes and subjects using a blended learning model. Presentation will include first hand experience by an educator who has both used, and trained many teachers in the use of coding and video game design as a classroom enhancement tool that increases engagement and gives students real world skills for the 21st century.

Creating iBooks for Social Studies
In a period of approximately 11 weeks, students enrolled in two elementary education methods courses agreed to publish an iBook integrating the Utah State Core standards for Language Arts, Social Studies, and the Ten Themes of Social Studies published by the National Council for the Social Studies. The First Edition of the book we created is a culmination of a significant amount of effort put forth by a group of individuals willing to take a journey into the unknown.  The result is a collection of lesson plans, links, and resources aligned with the ten social studies themes endorsed by the National Council of Social Studies (NCSS). Videos, photographs, lessons, and websites were gathered by senior education students at Southern Utah University (under the direction of Dr. Brian C. Ludlow) and organized to align with the Utah State Core and NCSS standards. Each resource is directly correlated with grade-specific standards. The book contains 229 pages of well-organized material and serves as a tremendous free resource for any elementary school teacher.
